Ooh! Fun! I love furniture shopping. I have yet to buy a couch (although we will eventually have to replace the one we lost in the tornado) and of course you have tons more places to shop than we do, so I don't really have a suggestion for a place. But I would recommend that you and Adrian go shopping together "for fun" first so you can see what each of you like, before you have the pressure of actually purchasing. And secondly, don't be intimidated by a pushy sales person (we had that happen once). If they are too pushy leave and go to a different store or even request someone else.
Have fun.

Well, price range is a big factor here...
Room & Board is hands down my favorite furniture store. Decent prices, decent quality.
Crate and Barrel usually has some nice stuff but they are pricey and the quality is not great... ditto for Pottery Barn.
Ikea, great prices but not great on the quality.
Always check the local spots, especially the thrift store. Craigslist is a good source too. You just never know what you might find secondhand. I've been eyeing a beautiful settee at our local thrift store for a few weeks. It is so not me (style-wise) but it's a beautiful piece.
Oh yeah, and check your local department stores that have furniture showrooms, they put pieces on clearance quite often.
oh!! would love to see what you end up with...I am in the "look" for a couch...not yet the "shop and spend" part yet though! :)
I've heard that Freed's is good.

Freed's is where I found the most options in my price range (like my sis said!). I also enjoyed looking at Wier's (great quality with a matching price tag).
One piece of advice - don't feel afraid to sit how you will sit on the couch. Take off shoes, lay down as if taking a nap, etc....
wow! well who knew this would generate so much conversation. so glad I asked. Kelly
We like Rooms to Go. We bought our living and dining room furniture from there and have our eye on some bedroom furniture, as well. It is not high end furniture, but it is attractive, decent quality and we can afford it. :-)

Oh you are going to SOO enjoy the shopping! Bill and I made another amazing Craigslist purchase. We got a beautiful Flexsteel sofa and chair for $400... and it honestly looks brandnew. It's great quality and it was crazy cheap. There's something very refreshing about getting a good secondhand deal. I will warn you though, if you use Craigslist you must be patient and check the deals EVERY day. I guarantee that your patience will pay off...
